Discord permissions

Check TextLantern’s Discord permissions

The bot does not need Administrator. It needs the permissions below to read messages and show translations.

Updated

Your permissions and the bot’s permissions

The person changing server-wide settings needs Manage Server. This is a permission for your account, separate from the bot permissions below.

Bot permission checklist

Permission Why it is needed What may stop working without it
View Channels See the configured channel The bot cannot read the channel
Read Message History Read messages needed for translation Message lookup may fail
Send Messages Post translated replies Replies cannot appear in the channel
Send Messages in Threads Post translations in threads Thread replies cannot appear
Embed Links Show formatted translation results Formatted results may fail
Manage Threads Manage translation threads and their members Thread management and cleanup may fail
Change Nickname Use the display name chosen for this server The bot cannot update its server nickname

The server authorization screen also includes Use Application Commands. Do not confuse that entry with access to personal translation: installing the personal app and checking a member’s command access are separate steps, explained below.

If the message action or command is missing

For personal translation, first check that TextLantern has been added to your Discord account using the access instructions you received. The personal message action and /t belong to that installation; adding the bot to a server is a different step.

For server setup commands, ask an administrator to check the app’s command access and the member’s Manage Server permission. Bot permissions and permission to run a command are separate checks.

Check the affected channel

Discord roles and channel overrides can change what the bot is allowed to do in one channel.

  1. Open the affected channel’s permission settings.
  2. Check the bot’s role and any permissions set directly for the bot.
  3. Check the permissions for the reply location you chose. Thread replies need thread permissions as well as channel access.
  4. Restore any missing permission, then retry the action.

If translation works in one channel but not another, compare their permissions and TextLantern settings.

For questions about thread members or nicknames, see permissions and access questions. For missing translations, use troubleshooting.
